a still relatively undiscovered nature area where hiking is a true pleasure: the Bonaire Sabal Palm Park. This protected area is the only place in the world where the Sabal Palm (<em>Sabal lougheediana<\/em>) grows in the wild. Along the rugged limestone landscape, you will not only encounter these distinctive trees, but also see hundreds of flamingos standing in the Pekelmeer. This sturdy palm tree, with its compact, rounded crown, reaches no more than about seven meters (23 feet) in height and grows exclusively in the wild on Bonaire, in the limestone plateau near Lima in the south of the island. In the wild, fewer than 20 mature specimens remain, and since 2023 an average of two have died per year. The Sabal Palm grows slowly and only produces seeds once mature. In the wild, this can take up to 30 years. BonB\u00e8rd\u00e8 conducts DNA research on Sabal Palms in gardens across Bonaire, to understand how these relate to the wild population. The park also has so-called <em>seed bombs<\/em>: small bags of biodegradable material filled with Sabal Palm seeds and compost. They protect the seeds from sun and wind until rainfall allows them to germinate. By monitoring these locations, researchers study the early growth of young palms while at the same time working to increase the wild population. <a href=\"https:\/\/hopibonaire.com\/en\/blog-klein-bonaire\/\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#5dc0c9\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Klein Bonaire<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> has a similar landscape. After rainfall, parts of the trail can become muddy. Visiting in the dry season? The landscape may look bare, but it is far from boring. Sturdy native trees make the landscape worth exploring. That makes this route somewhat more demanding than the other two. The route is divided into two loops, A and B on the map. In loop A, you pass low-lying areas in the landscape where temporary ponds form during the rainy season. These briefly attract ducks, <a href=\"https:\/\/hopibonaire.com\/en\/photoblog-the-transformations-of-the-green-iguana\/\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#5dc0c9\" class=\"has-inline-color\">iguanas<\/mark><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hopibonaire.com\/en\/blog-wild-mammals-bonaire\/#The_Bats_of_Bonaire\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#5dc0c9\" class=\"has-inline-color\">bats <\/mark><\/strong><\/a>and insects. These young palms are crucial for the survival of the species. The path is mostly long and straight, with a small loop at the end along the fenced High Biodiversity Conservation Area. This part of the park has been fenced since 2021. This sturdy palm tree, with its compact, rounded crown, reaches no more than about seven meters (23 feet) in height and grows exclusively in the wild on Bonaire, in the limestone plateau near Lima in the south of the island. In the wild, fewer than 20 mature specimens remain, and since 2023 an average of two have died per year. The Sabal Palm grows slowly and only produces seeds once mature. In the wild, this can take up to 30 years. BonB\u00e8rd\u00e8 conducts DNA research on Sabal Palms in gardens across Bonaire, to understand how these relate to the wild population. The park also has so-called seed bombs: small bags of biodegradable material filled with Sabal Palm seeds and compost. They protect the seeds from sun and wind until rainfall allows them to germinate. By monitoring these locations, researchers study the early growth of young palms while at the same time working to increase the wild population. <a href=\"https:\/\/hopibonaire.com\/en\/blog-klein-bonaire\/\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#5dc0c9\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Klein Bonaire<\/mark><\/strong><\/a> has a similar landscape. That makes this route somewhat more demanding than the other two. The route is divided into two loops, A and B on the map. In loop A, you pass low-lying areas in the landscape where temporary ponds form during the rainy season.
