Extensive tour description

Unlike the other tour operators on Bonaire, with HopiBonaire you will visit all parts of the island.

The west
In the west we of course visit all the well known highlights, such as 1000 Steps and Plantation House Karpata. Here we tell you all about Bonaire’s plantation era. But we do more. We also stop at more hidden places, such as the Love Bridge and a cave where goats find fresh water. At one place we find the perfect opportunity to explain the geology of Bonaire and point out traces from the time when the island rose from the ocean.

The north
The north of Bonaire is known for the old village of Rincon and Lake Goto, the perfect place to spot flamingos. We bring binoculars and take close up photos of these spectacular birds for you. In Rincon we enjoy the colorful houses and pass the Catholic church and Mangazina di Rei, a place with a painful history from the time when Bonaire was a government plantation. Off the beaten track we visit another hidden gem: the ancient rock art left by the first inhabitants of Bonaire.

The south
In the south of Bonaire salt takes center stage. We first visit the bright blue lagoon of Lac Bay and the mangroves. In this special forest trees have found remarkable ways to survive in the salty environment. Windsurf paradise Sorobon is of course also included.

Further south we explore salt, Bonaire’s famous export product. At the slave huts near the historic salt pans the painful history of slavery comes alive. At the White Hell we reflect on the harsh conditions under which enslaved people had to work. Modern salt production is explained at the Salt Pier, the salt pyramids and the pink lakes. We also take time for hidden places, admiring street art and driftwood art. At the Willemstoren lighthouse we look at the Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary, breeding ground of the Caribbean flamingo.

The east
The east is skipped by most people because the roads are unpaved. Our pickup trucks are perfectly suited for this area. We drive through the kunuku, the countryside, where Bonairians spend their weekends and where donkeys and goats roam. We also stop to watch iguanas, parrots and parakeets. Along the east coast we enjoy the peace and rugged beauty of this area. In the lunar landscape waves crash against the cliffs. At Boka Washikemba the waves roll calmly onto the beach. Highlights here are the Washikemba Blowhole and the iconic Longest Tree of Bonaire, a giant mangrove tree in a red colored landscape.

Sunset finale?
Want to end your day with the best sunset on the island? Book the afternoon tour and enjoy a toast at this spectacular spot.
