Extensive tour description

Leave the beaten track and join an adventure to the unspoiled east side of Bonaire. We take you to places that remain hidden to many: the kunuku, Washikemba Plantation and Bolivia Plantation. Here you will find wild nature, historical treasures, impressive views and the powerful ocean.

The kunuku
On Bonaire’s countryside many Bonairians spend their weekends. Donkeys and goats roam here and you see colorful birds such as the Venezuelan troupial and the parakeet. At the Bara di Karta viewpoint we look out over Washikemba, Bolivia, Kralendijk, Lac Bay and the southern tip of Bonaire.

The rugged ocean
Both plantations border the east coast, where the ocean pounds endlessly against the cliffs. At the blowholes the water shoots high into the air. Even though you stand right above this spectacular natural force, we make sure you stay dry. At the bokas you also experience the power of the sea when the bright blue waves roll inland at full force. The cliff coast is not only impressive and photogenic, but also a place to pause and quietly enjoy.

Plantation Washikemba
On this small plantation there is a lot to see. The ochre yellow plantation house is well preserved, as are the old wells from which the livestock once drank. You still see grazing donkeys, goats and sometimes sheep. The animals roam in remarkable landscapes, such as the lunar landscape of Punta Blanko, the red plain of Saliña Washikemba and the cactus covered hills of Red Hill.

On foot you experience this varied area even more intensely. Are you a hiker? Customize your tour with the varied Red Hill hike.

Plantation Bolivia
Bolivia, the largest plantation on Bonaire, is full of nature and stories. At Plantation house Boven Bolivia you get an impression of life in this place. Sheep and goat herding played an important role here, which you see at Kura di Bolivia, the old corral where the animals spent the night. At the coast you find Spelonk Lighthouse, along with the abandoned house of the lighthouse keepers. These imposing buildings in the barren landscape are very photogenic.

Nearby you pass Sinkhole Spelonk, a collapsed limestone cave that left a circular hole in the landscape. Fortunately the roof of Cave Spelonk is supported by dozens of thick pillars. As early as 1500 years ago this remarkable cave was a cherished place. The Caiquetios, the first inhabitants of Bonaire, made offerings here to their nature spirits. To this day you can admire the hundreds of rock drawings they left behind.
